Woolly Mammoths Tooth
Probiscidean: Mammuthus Primigenius sp With Attached Label and Information Sheet
Age:
20 to 30 Thousand Years Old
This is a well preserved 20 to 30 thousand year old early elephants tooth of grey/brown colour.
The Family of Proboscideans are animals with a trunk and long curvey tusk.
The tooth is in excellent condition being in the early stage of diagenisis (hardening to rock), with no flaking or disintegration of material.
Woolly Mammoths were herbivores with four of the above teeth in their skull, two either side, upper and lower.
Due to the colder conditions of the last ice age Woolly Mammoths needed to stay smaller than modern elephants only reaching about eight foot high at the shoulders.
They became extinct around ten thousand years ago.
