A fossilised piece of timber from Madagascar that looks like a real piece of wood, with the bark still showing in an identical form to the original. This was once a chunk of tree that laid on the ground and quickly got covered with a limestone sediment (indicating watery conditions) which filled in the microscopic pore spaces and cemented itself together in the identical shape of the original timber. Over many millions of years the deposit compacted and finally lithified, or petrified to form solid rock. When held, the extra weight of the limestone rock to an equivalent wood log can be appreciated.
This section has been cut and polished at one end to reveal the heartwood, which still shows the circular grain orientation of the original core of the log.
